THE OLYMPIC MEMORIAL COIN

Athens 2004 Olympic Games Coin Set "As in the daytime there is no star in the sky warmer and brighter than
the sun, likewise there is no competition greater than
the Olympic Games."

Pindar, Greek lyric poet, 5th century BC

According to historic records, the ancient Olympic Games were first introduced in 776 B.C. as part of a religious festival to honour Greek Gods. The games were held in the rural sanctuary site in Greece called Olympia. Participants from every corner of the Greek world aimed to claim victory in the form of an olive wreath. Such tradition continued for almost 12 centuries before the games were banned in 393 A.D. by Emperor Theodosius.

To continue the sporting event, the first modern Olympic Games was revived in Athens in 1896. From then on, the games have been welcomed by the Greek nation and the whole world. Today, the Olympic Games is considered the world’s most festive and highly-anticipated sporting event which promotes the spirit of peace and friendship amongst all nations across the globe.

In August 2004, 108 years after holding the first modern Olympics in Athens, the Olympic Games is returning to its birthplace. With more than 10,000 athletes from 200 nations participating, the Olympic spirit will once again flourish in the games that celebrate sportsmanship and the quest for excellence.
